With placards they came to demonstrate
And claimed they would not cease
As they called for human rights for all
For reform and for peace
And after the march to the embassy
Was a cafe gathering for thise at the demonstration
And strange to hear was what was said
As with others I held conversation...
"Its good to campaign on Mexico
Thats 5000 miles away,
But Kosovo Roma on our doorstep,
Is another issue for another day"
"Refugees we cannot let in
We cannor help the poor
It would break our rich little nation
We got to close the door..."
While this was a voice of the few
It made the movement look a farce
And disapointed from the cafe I left
Muttering "Amnesty my arse!"

I was at an Amnesty Ireland march about environmental activists in Mexico, and the conversation after made strange hearing... its OK to worry about Mexico, but they were not really interested in Kosovo Roma, refugees should not be let in, etc., etc. I hasten to add that this was the minority, but it still showed the movement in a strange light. Charity begins at home, Kosovo is our Mexico. Sorry for the profanity in the name and the poem!
